Identification of Grave Stones in The Old Burial Ground
Main and Kendall Streets, Walpole, Massachusetts
In May of 1998, Mr. Guy J. Ciannavei of the Walpole Historical Society contacted me and asked if I could help identify the individuals interred in the Old Burial Ground in Walpole. Since many of the graves contained Hartshorns and their extended families, I agreed to accept the challenge. An initial examination of the surnames appeared to represent one large interconnected family. The most frequently appearing surnames are: Allen, Bullard, Clap/p, Fales, Gay, Guild, Hunt, Kendall, Kingsbury, Morse, Payson, Robbins and Willit.
The cemetery contains the graves of approximately 187 individuals. The earliest burial is 1718 while the latest is 1863. This study attempts to identify the individuals as well as their relationship to the others interred in the cemetery.
Footstones with initials are particularly difficult to identify but those found here are listed and identified where possible. The primary reference used was Vital Records of Walpole, Massachusetts, to the Year 1850. Other sources (including The Hartshorn Families of America) are noted. Some stone identification is speculative and is so noted. This work was completed shortly before the death of Mr. Ciannavei. I am indebted to him for stimulating my interest in this project. As the compiler of this work, it is my desire that this report be made available to the Society and to the public domain, without restriction.
