Join the Teen Advisory Board!
Next Meeting: August 7th at 3:00 PM
Who? Any member of the Walpole community who is in grades 7-12 (or the equivalent, if homeschooled)
What? The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) is your opportunity to have a voice in influencing future collection development (i.e., what materials do we not have that you would like to see?), programming ideas, volunteer events, etc.
When? There are monthly general meetings during the school year to discuss ideas, upcoming events, and the like. During the school year, these typically occur at 7:30PM on the first or second Wednesday of each month; during the summer, meetings are usually during the day. Our next meeting is Monday, August 7th at 3:00PM in the Community Room.
When the TAB sponsors an event, those members who are taking point on planning may wish to hold additional meetings, and members may be needed to help with promoting, setting up, running, and/or striking the event.
Where? At the library, although the specific room may vary. (I will always have the location posted in the Young Adult Room.)
Why? It’s an opportunity to make the library a space that is more teen focused and teen friendly. It’s also a chance to have a low-stress hangout on a weekday evening. When it comes time for you to apply to schools and jobs, TAB membership will look good on your application and/or resume. The TAB can count toward any volunteer hours you need, as long as you make a good-faith effort to come to meetings and to participate in some of the TAB-sponsored events. (Plus, as you may have noticed from the description of other teen programs, your YA Librarian firmly believes in the necessity of providing snacks.)
How? Come to a meeting. If you can’t make it to our next general meeting (8/7 at 3:00), come find me (Elizabeth) in the YA Room, or email me about it. My email address is edoherty[AT]ocln.org
If you would like to attend and need accommodations, please contact me directly (edoherty[AT]ocln.org) so I can set them up. If you require a CDI or ASL interpreter, please contact me at least two weeks in advance so I have time to find someone. Thank you.
Join the Walpole Library Young Adult Discord Server
In case you don’t know much about Discord already, it’s a free platform where users can talk and hang out in various text and voice-chat channels. Members of a server play a vital role in creating the community they want to participate in, and our server has a dedicated suggestions channel for that very purpose.
Come chat about things you’re reading or watching, play games or listen to music on a voice channel, or share pictures of the art you’re making.
This server is open to teen members (aged 13-18) of the Walpole Library community.
To join, please fill out the Discord server application. Once you do, I will send you an invitation link. Click on that and you’re in! (Don’t worry if you don’t see any channels at first: I have to assign you a role in the server before they will become visible.)
If you aren’t familiar with Discord, I recommend the Beginner’s Guide to Discord (website) and/or How Discord Works in 148,000 Milliseconds or Less (video).
If you have any questions or concerns, please email Elizabeth at edoherty[at]ocln.org or take a look at the Parents’ Guide to Discord or the Discord Safety Center.
